How to Extend Your Watch Life — Simple Maintenance Every Owner Should Do

A well-maintained watch lasts decades. A neglected one loses accuracy, develops moisture problems, or simply stops working long before its time. The good news: basic watch maintenance is simple, takes under 30 minutes per year, and requires no specialist knowledge — just the right tools and the right habits.

1. Change the Battery Before It Dies Completely

Most quartz watch owners wait until the watch stops completely before changing the battery. This is a mistake. A fully depleted battery can leak electrolyte into the movement — causing corrosion that's expensive or impossible to repair. Change the battery when the watch starts running slow (a sign of low battery in most quartz watches) rather than waiting for it to stop.

With a Kingsdun Watch Repair Kit, battery replacement is a 5-minute job at home. Read our step-by-step battery replacement guide for the full process.

2. Keep the Crown Screwed Down

On water-resistant watches, the crown (the knob on the side) has a screw-lock mechanism. Many people pull the crown out to set the time and forget to push and lock it back. An unscrewed crown eliminates the watch's water resistance entirely — making a 50m water-resistant watch no more water-resistant than a non-rated one.

After setting the time, always push the crown in firmly and turn clockwise until it locks with a slight resistance.

3. Rinse After Salt Water or Sweat Exposure

Salt — from sea water or heavy sweat — is corrosive to watch cases, bracelets, and gaskets. After beach trips or intense exercise sessions, rinse your watch briefly under fresh running water (assuming it's at least 30m water resistant) and dry with a soft cloth. This removes salt deposits before they work into the case back gap and degrade the gasket.

4. Change Straps Annually

Leather straps absorb sweat and degrade naturally — most leather straps in Indian humidity need replacing every 6–12 months. Rubber straps last longer but can harden and crack after 18–24 months in high UV environments. Changing straps is a 3-minute job with the spring bar tool included in the Kingsdun 149-Piece Kit.

5. Professional Service Every 5–7 Years (Mechanical Watches)

Mechanical watches need the movement disassembled, cleaned, and re-lubricated periodically. Lubricants dry out and oxidise over time, causing increased friction and inaccuracy. This service requires specialist equipment — it's not a home job. Budget ₹2,000–₹8,000 depending on the watch brand and complication level.

Quartz watches don't need movement servicing — just battery changes and periodic case cleaning.

6. Store Properly When Not Wearing

  • Don't store in direct sunlight — UV fades dials, discolours rubber straps, and weakens leather
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes — rapid temperature swings cause condensation inside the case, which damages the movement
  • Keep away from magnets — speakers, laptop bases, and handbag clasps can magnetise a mechanical movement, causing it to run fast
  • Wind automatic watches occasionally if not worn for extended periods — a fully wound automatic movement stays lubricated; a stopped one sits with dried lubricants in stressed positions

7. Clean the Case and Bracelet Regularly

Skin oils, dust, and grime accumulate in the bracelet links and case lugs over time. Clean with a soft toothbrush and warm soapy water (on water-resistant watches only). Dry thoroughly. The difference in appearance after a proper clean is remarkable — most watches that look "old" are actually just dirty.

For getting into tight bracelet link gaps, the small picks and tweezers included in the Kingsdun 149-Piece Watch Repair Kit are useful.

The One Tool Every Watch Owner Needs

Most of the maintenance above requires nothing more than a case back opener, spring bar tool, and plastic tweezers — all included in the Kingsdun 149-Piece Watch Repair Kit. For a collection of 3+ watches, the kit pays for itself in the first year of battery replacements and strap changes alone.
