How to Replace a Watch Battery at Home — Complete Guide
Share
A dead watch battery is one of those small annoyances that most people delay fixing for weeks because they assume it's complicated. It isn't. With the right tools, replacing a watch battery takes about 5–10 minutes and costs almost nothing beyond the battery itself.
What You Need
The Kingsdun 149-Piece Watch Repair Kit includes everything: a case back opener, case cushion to hold the watch, tweezers, and a full set of precision screwdrivers. Pick up a replacement battery from any electronics shop — tell them your watch model and they'll give you the right one (usually a CR2032, SR626SW, or similar).
Prefer a more comprehensive toolkit? The Kingsdun 168-Piece Kit adds additional case back tools and gaskets for water-resistant watches.
Step 1: Open the Case Back
Most watch case backs are either screw-type or snap-off type.
- Snap-off: Insert the case knife from the kit into the small notch on the side of the case and twist gently. The back pops off.
- Screw-type: Use the case back wrench from the kit — align the prongs with the slots and turn anticlockwise.
Place the watch face-down on the cushion while opening — it holds the watch securely and protects the crystal from scratching.
Step 2: Remove the Old Battery
Use the plastic tweezers (not metal — metal can short the battery) to lift out the old battery. Note the orientation — positive side up or down — before removing it. Take a photo if needed.
Step 3: Insert the New Battery
Place the new battery in the same orientation. Press gently until it seats flush. Don't touch the battery surface with bare fingers — the oils can affect conductivity over time. Use tweezers.
Step 4: Test Before Closing
Before sealing the case, check that the watch is running — the second hand should start moving within a few seconds of inserting the battery. If it doesn't, check the battery orientation.
Step 5: Close the Case
For snap backs, simply press firmly and evenly until you hear a click. For screw backs, align and tighten clockwise — firm but not overtightened.
Water Resistance Note
If your watch is water resistant, you should ideally replace the case back gasket when doing a battery change. The Kingsdun 149-piece kit includes gaskets for common watch sizes. If your watch is rated beyond 50m, have it pressure tested after a DIY battery change.
