How to Groom a Pomeranian at Home — Full Guide for Indian Pet Owners
Share
The Pomeranian is one of India's most popular small breeds — and with that gorgeous double coat, one of the highest-maintenance dogs to keep looking their best at home. Many Indian Pom owners make the same mistakes: cutting the coat too short, bathing too often, or using clippers designed for larger breeds. This guide covers the correct approach.
The Pomeranian Double Coat — What You're Working With
Poms have a profuse double coat: a thick, soft undercoat and a longer, straight outer coat that stands away from the body (the "puffball" look). The outer coat's natural texture is what gives Poms their characteristic round silhouette — managing this correctly is the entire art of Pom grooming.
Critical rule: Never shave a Pomeranian's coat. "Pom fur shaving syndrome" is a well-documented condition where the coat doesn't grow back properly after shaving — you can permanently ruin your dog's coat with one close cut. Always trim, never shave.
What You Need
- Oneisall X2 + N5 Combo — the X2 for light body coat maintenance, the N5 paw trimmer for between-toe and facial detail work. The low noise level (under 50dB) is critical for Poms, who are sensitive and alert to sound.
- Pin brush — for the outer coat. Slicker brushes work but can break the fine outer coat hairs with aggressive use.
- Wide-tooth comb — for finishing and checking for mats
- Thinning scissors — for shaping the coat outline
- Blunt-tipped scissors — for the face and ears
How Often to Groom a Pomeranian
- Brushing: Every other day minimum. Daily during shedding season (March–May and Oct–Nov). Mats form quickly in the Pom coat — especially behind the ears, under the collar, and in the armpit area.
- Bathing: Every 4–5 weeks. More frequent bathing strips the natural oils that keep the coat full and healthy.
- Full groom: Every 6–8 weeks.
- Paw trim: Every 2–3 weeks.
Step 1: Brush Out Completely Before Bathing
Start with the pin brush, working section by section from the head backward. The most mat-prone areas on a Pomeranian are: behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits (where the front legs meet the chest), and around the hindquarters. Work through any tangles with your fingers first, then the comb — never pull at a mat with a brush.
Brush "upward" — against the direction of coat growth — to fluff the undercoat and check for hidden mats. This is called "line brushing" and is the correct technique for double-coated dogs.
Step 2: Bathe
Use a gentle moisturising shampoo — Pom coats benefit from conditioning. Wet the coat thoroughly (the dense double coat is surprisingly water-resistant) and work shampoo through to the skin. Rinse completely. Apply a light conditioner and rinse again.
Blow dry on a low heat setting while brushing upward — this is what creates the characteristic Pom puff. Air drying leads to a flat, matted coat. The blow dry is not optional for Poms.
Step 3: Shape the Coat
Use thinning scissors to neaten the coat outline into a round, even shape — called the "lion cut" or "teddy bear cut" depending on the style you prefer. The goal is not to shorten the coat significantly but to remove any uneven, flyaway hairs that break the round silhouette.
Use the X2 clipper with the longest guard (16–22mm) only on the body coat for light thinning if the coat is unusually thick. Never go shorter than 9mm on a Pom's body coat.
Step 4: Paw and Face Trim
Use the N5 paw trimmer to clean up between the toes and around the paw pads. Keep the fur level with the pad — Poms have fine paw fur that collects debris easily. For the face, use blunt-tipped scissors to round the facial fur neatly and trim any stray ear hairs. Never use a clipper on the Pom face — scissors only.
Managing the Pomeranian Coat in Indian Humidity
India's humidity is hard on Pom coats — the moisture causes the coat to look flat and limp rather than fluffy. A few tips:
- Brush and blow dry after every bath — never let a Pom's coat air dry flat
- Keep the home cool — a cooler, drier environment maintains the coat's puffiness better
- Brush out after play sessions where the coat has gotten damp
